Street Art = Ricksahw Art?

Zdobiło go też kilka graffiti z szablonów. Niewiele.

In Bangladesh street art practically does not exist. You will not see graffiti none even bothers to make fun out of election posters, no one draws mustache on the candidates faces, no one paints actress’s teeth black. There are no stickers.

So far I have seen only one wall in Banani with some slogans written on it. You can find them in the pictures. There were a few pattern graffiti as well. Not many. New Banksy will not be born here.

But all that does not mean that no nothings is being decorated. Take rickshaws. In every guide book you can read about “Rickshaw Art” (and all the tourists I’ve seen use one and only Lonely Planet anyway). Nevertheless it’s hard to call it art – it’s more of artistic craft. Patterns are multiplied and it’s difficult to find a unique piece.

Thanks to thousands of young people who graduated from western universities Bangladesh becomes more “personal”. However it is still the center of Asia. The collective Asia which does not stress individuality as strongly as spoiled Europe. And this otherness I appreciate.

Nasza dzielnia / Our neighbourhood

Mieszkamy w okolicy zwanej Badda, bardzo blisko Ronda Gulshan One. Aby dojść do ronda trzeba przejść groblą na utworzoną na jeziorze Gulshan.

We live in the Badda area very close to Gulshan One Circle. But to get to the circle frist we need to cross the dike on the Gulshan Lake.

Dhaka is full of animals, homeless dogs mostly. But unlike in for instance Maurutius they never seem to be hungry.

On the right side of the dike on Gulshan Lake is a small vegetable market where using my hands and a few words I managed to remember I buy tomatoes and other vegetables every day. And S. picks fruits that I have never tried before to prepare his delicious salads.

Jak to w tropikach - wszędzie wiszą kable. A w tle Gulshan One Circle i charakterystyczne dla byłych angielskich kolonii, piętrowe autobusy.

As usual in tropical countries - cables are hanging everywhere. In the background you can see Gulshan One Circle and characteristic for ex-Brittish colonies, double deck buses.

Podróżować można na wiele sposobów, szczególnie w obłędnych korkach Dhaki.

There are many ways to travel especially in the crazy traffic jams in Dhaka.

"Madame, rikshaw?" "Sister, sister, come!"

Gulshan to obok Banani jedna z najbardziej drogich i eleganckich dzielnic. Mieszkania w willach zwanych "Pałac Zachodni", "Zamek Bengalu", "Duma Gulshan" itp. są przestronne i pewnie droższe niż podobne metraże w centrum Warszawy.

Gulshan is alike Banani one of the poshest and most expensive districts. Apartaments in villas called "Western Palace", "Bengal Castle", "Gulshan Pride" etc. are spacious and probably more expensive than same living area in the center of Warsaw.

Niektóre budynki w Dhace, szczególnie w pełnym słońcu, wyglądają naprawdę pięknie.

Some buildings in Dhaka, especially in the full sun look really pretty.

Which does not mean that these elegant, modern buildings are not surrounded by slums.

Rikshaw paintings shall probably be qualified as Bengali vershion of street art...

From the distance the water in Banani Lake seems to be so clean...

This and following two pictures show quite characteristic for Bangladesh style of beautification... And it's hard to talk about "kitsch" because that would be very European way of thinking about beauty.

Zwierzęta odpoczywające na środku ulicy zdają się jeszcze mniej niż ludzie przejmować tłokiem i hałasem.

Animals seem to be even less considered about the jams and noise than people and they calmly rest in the middle of streets.
